UC San Diego Excels in Research and Education, Secures No. 7 Spot Among U.S. Public Universities

Recognised globally for its commitment to academic excellence and groundbreaking research, the University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego) continues to be a leader in higher education. Further validating its outstanding reputation, the 2025 Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR) Global 2000 List has placed UC San Diego at No. 7 among U.S. public universities, underscoring its dedication to quality education and research. CWUR, an independent organisation, evaluates global universities using objective data, ranking them based on education quality, faculty achievements, research output, and alumni success, without relying on surveys. Furthermore, the university has achieved global recognition, securing the No. 21 spot among all U.S. universities and No. 33 worldwide. This positions UC San Diego in the top 0.2% of more than 21,000 institutions assessed globally. The university’s impressive standing is largely attributed to its exceptional faculty quality and research output, earning a faculty rank of 12 and a research rank of 25. These rankings were determined based on key criteria such as faculty members receiving prestigious academic awards and the volume of influential research published in high-impact journals.

Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla emphasised that UC San Diego’s recognition in the CWUR rankings reflects its unwavering commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and leadership development. He acknowledged the significant contributions of faculty and researchers in advancing knowledge and driving global innovation. CWUR evaluates universities using a methodology that considers education quality (25%), alumni employment (25%), faculty honours (10%), and research output and impact (40%).

In recent achievements, three faculty members, Russell Impagliazzo, Cornelis Murre, and Elizabeth Winzeler, have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, one of the highest honours for U.S. scientists. Additionally, six other distinguished scholars, Amanda Datnow, James D. Hamilton, Randy Hampton, M. Brian Maple, Carol Padden, and Suresh Subramani, were inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, further reinforcing UC San Diego’s academic excellence. Meanwhile, UC San Diego neurobiologists have made significant discoveries regarding brain circuit reorganisation during motor learning. Their study, published in Nature, utilised advanced imaging and analysis to demonstrate how learning reshapes connections between the motor thalamus and primary motor cortex, offering valuable insights for neurological therapies and technologies.

In the field of social science, researchers at UC San Diego’s Rady School of Management have revealed that even limited exposure to news about congressional stock trading reduces public trust in lawmakers and decreases their willingness to follow laws, underscoring the urgency of bipartisan reform. UC San Diego continues to earn widespread recognition for its research excellence, further solidifying its position as a leader in higher education.
