Arts, sports, and science are essential components of education, as engaging in these activities contributes to student’s holistic development. On November 27, the 63rd Kollam Revenue District School Arts Festival in Kottarakara was inaugurated by Finance Minister K. N. Balagopal, who emphasized the importance of a balanced approach between academics and the arts in students' lives.
The Finance Minister stated that a well-rounded education encompasses academics and the arts, sports, and sciences. He described such events as occasions for celebration and unity among students. With more than 7,000 students participating, Kerala’s School Arts Festival is more of a celebration than a competition. The Minister further noted that the drama competition, which began on November 27, captivated the audience by addressing complex societal issues, despite its simple structure.
The District Panchayat President, P.K. Gopan, and the District Police Chief (Kollam Rural), K.M. Sabu Mathew, were the chief guests for the event. The festival featured a series of competitions, with literary and art events completed on November 26. On November 27, nearly 30 events took place across 14 venues, including drama, light music, maragakkali, bharatanatyam, mohiniyattam, kuchipudi, monoact, and folk dance. On November 28, major events such as oppana, mimicry, and kathaprasangam were scheduled, while thiruvathira, panchayadyam, and keralanadanam competitions were set for November 29. The festival is expected to conclude on November 30, with highlights including group dance, group song, ghazal, chavittunatakam, and poorakali.
The Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development, J. Chinchurani, presided over the event. She remarked that the organization of previous years' State School Arts Festivals had been flawless, and the upcoming event, regarded as Asia’s largest cultural festival, will soon be held in Delhi. The Festival highlights the importance of balancing academics with arts, sports, and sciences for students' overall development. With a wide range of events, from drama and music to traditional dances, it fosters a spirit of joy and participation among students.
