Fifth Annual Startup Collegiate Competition Set to Showcase Student Innovation
Apr 16, 2025 |
The Allegany County Startup Collegiate Competition is set to hold its fifth annual event on April 12, 2025. According to the organisers, student teams from Alfred University, Alfred State College, and Houghton University will showcase their business proposals to a judging panel in a bid to secure cash prizes. The competition, scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m., will be hosted by Alfred State College, which previously organised the 2023 event. It was noted that Alfred University hosted the inaugural competition in 2021, as well as subsequent events in 2022 and 2024, with its teams clinching first and second place last year. This year’s program will include a live stream between 1 and 3 p.m.
Organisers shared that undergraduate participants have been diligently working to identify local business needs and devise solutions for their customers that could be transformed into practical entrepreneurial ventures. Throughout the process, students were guided by experienced industry and academic mentors. The competition, it was stated, will foster collaboration among students from the three colleges, encourage entrepreneurship, retain talented professionals within Allegany County, support the growth of small businesses, and offer valuable experiential learning opportunities.
Officials explained that the winning plans would be determined by the panel of judges, with $8,500 in cash prizes available. In addition to financial awards, top teams will also receive in-kind contributions in the form of professional services to help launch their businesses. Organisers emphasised that students from any undergraduate program are eligible to join the competition.
The event is said to be a joint initiative by Alfred University, Alfred State College, Houghton University, and IncubatorWorks. A committee comprising representatives from Alfred University, Alfred State College, Houghton University, Allegany County, Western NY Wilds, the ACCORD Corporation, and the Western New York Incubator Network oversees its execution. Sponsors include The Centre for Advanced Ceramic Technology (CACT) at Alfred University, the Alfred University College of Business, Alfred State College, and Sealing Devices Inc. This event is designed to develop entrepreneurial talent and support economic development. It also highlights the collaborative efforts of educational and community organisations in Allegany County.
