In a significant stride towards sustainability in sports, the University of Bath is set to unveil the UK's first fully recyclable 3G pitch on 28 May. This pioneering development underscores the University’s commitment to environmentally responsible sporting infrastructure. The grand opening will include a ceremonial first kick by Professor Phil Taylor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University, following a formal gathering attended by representatives from the University, The SU Bath (Students’ Union), local sports clubs such as Bath City FC, and Verde, the Bristol-based contractors behind the project. The new pitch reportedly meets FIFA, World Rugby, and Sport England standards, thereby ensuring quality, performance, and safety. Notably, it features latex-free turf made from a single polymer, which allows for full recyclability. Furthermore, instead of using rubber crumb, a biodegradable wood-particle infill has been incorporated, providing natural cushioning while significantly reducing synthetic material use.
Adding to its sustainable design, the shock pad beneath the turf is fully recyclable and reusable. Moreover, the surrounding features prioritise environmental protection, with 4-metre wooden fencing that minimises noise and light pollution to safeguard local bat habitats. In addition, app-controlled floodlights for the pitch, MUGA, and training strip help to reduce energy consumption when not in use. This development is a reflection of the University of Bath’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and climate action, aiming to lower its environmental impact while fostering a greener community. Professor Phil Taylor has remarked that the new recyclable 3G pitch not only enhances the University’s world-class sporting facilities but also expands opportunities for students, staff, and residents to participate in sports.
Furthermore, Professor Taylor has emphasised that the pitch serves as a strong example of the University’s dedication to sustainability, highlighting its use of eco-friendly materials, innovative technologies, and designs that minimise environmental impact both locally and throughout its lifecycle. Additionally, the pitch forms an integral part of the University’s long-term sports infrastructure strategy, supporting elite and student athletes while remaining accessible to the public through its floodlit, all-weather, pay-and-play setup.
Since its founding in 2008, Verde has been committed to delivering sustainable and innovative solutions for artificial sports surfaces. Its Director, Jonathan Bland, expressed pride in partnering with the University of Bath, stressing that the collaborative effort behind the project will not only support future athletes but also benefit the wider community. The University of Bath is widely recognised as one of the UK’s leading sporting institutions and is one of only eight UK Sport-accredited Elite Training Centres. Over the years, it has played a crucial role in supporting Team GB and ParalympicsGB athletes, with those training at the University securing 85 Olympic and Paralympic medals since 1996 across various sports, including athletics, bobsleigh, modern pentathlon, skeleton, and swimming.
Additionally, reports indicate that more than 1,500 students represent the University and the SU Bath in regional and national sports competitions. Meanwhile, the Team Bath Sports Training Village facilities remain open to the public, reflecting the University’s dedication to community engagement and the promotion of inclusive access to sports.
