Multilingual Future: Bihar Integrates French and German into Government College Curriculum

Global Opportunities Await: Bihar Launches Foreign Language Courses in Higher Education

Language is more than just a means of communication—it is a bridge to new opportunities, global connections, and cultural understanding. Acknowledging the increasing significance of global communication and the necessity for diverse skill sets in an interconnected world, the Bihar government has taken a commendable step forward in education. To equip students with linguistic proficiency and enhance their career prospects, the state has introduced foreign language courses in French and German across 15 government colleges.

Furthermore, this initiative, announced by the state’s education department, is part of a broader vision to incorporate language learning into all government-run higher education institutions in Bihar. By enabling students to master foreign languages, the programme seeks to provide them with a competitive advantage in international academia and the job market, thereby reinforcing Bihar’s commitment to global educational standards.

According to officials, the programme aims to develop language skills beneficial in international education, business, tourism, and diplomacy. As a result, students at selected colleges can now enrol in basic French and German courses, either as part of their curriculum or as a certificate programme. Moreover, these courses are available to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, with authorities confirming that no additional tuition fees will be charged for participation.

Importantly, these classes are being conducted under the Skill Development Programme, which is aligned with the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The Department of Education has affirmed that the programme is already underway in colleges situated in Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, and Darbhanga. Additionally, trained instructors have been appointed, and beginner-friendly study materials have been carefully prepared to facilitate effective learning. The government intends to assess the initial phase before implementing a broader expansion to all government colleges across Bihar.

This initiative arrives in response to the growing demand for multilingual professionals, particularly within fields such as information technology, international business, and tourism. Notably, students and educators alike have welcomed the development, describing it as a timely and much-needed enhancement to Bihar’s higher education system. Through this strategic effort, Bihar is reinforcing its commitment to fostering globally competent graduates who can thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
