India-UK Partnership Grows as British Council Targets University International Offices

In an era where higher education is becoming increasingly global, the British Council is taking a significant step toward fostering deeper international collaboration between the UK and India. Recognising the growing emphasis on internationalisation in India's National Education Policy 2020, the British Council is committed to equipping Indian universities with the expertise and structural capacity needed to engage meaningfully on a global scale.

By inviting UK sector bodies and higher education institutions to provide specialised training, this initiative addresses existing gaps and strengthens the role of international offices within Indian universities, ensuring they are well-prepared to navigate and implement international partnerships effectively. India’s National Education Policy 2020 highlights the importance of internationalisation, leading the University Grants Commission to appoint 179 International Officers across institutions. Several state governments have also shown interest in collaborating with UK universities, which have strong expertise in areas like recruitment, research, fundraising, and transnational education. Through such partnerships, UK universities can help Indian institutions develop the skills and knowledge needed to achieve their internationalisation goals.

Research by the British Council has identified major challenges in collaborating with Indian universities, including a lack of common language, clear goals, and standardised structures in international departments. A scoping study also found gaps in expertise and experience but noted that UK universities and sector bodies are willing to support Indian institutions in strengthening their internationalisation efforts. To address these challenges, the British Council has developed specialised training modules to support international offices in Indian universities. With the modules now complete, the Council is seeking a delivery partner to implement the programme. This initiative bridges existing gaps and strengthens collaboration between UK and Indian institutions.
