Groundbreaking Achievements Recognized in Cambridge’s Prestigious Ceremony

A Proud Moment: Cambridge Acknowledges Leaders in Education, Arts, and Innovation

The University of Cambridge is set to honour several distinguished individuals with honorary degrees in recognition of their exceptional contributions across diverse fields. Michael Omari Owuo Junior, popularly known as Stormzy, will be awarded a Doctorate in Law for his philanthropic initiatives, notably the Stormzy Scholarship at Cambridge. Launched in 2018, this program supports two Black British students annually by covering their tuition and living expenses. With the backing of HSBC UK in 2021, the program was expanded to benefit an additional ten students per year. So far, 55 students have been supported, with the largest cohort scheduled to graduate in 2025. Stormzy's efforts have been acknowledged for encouraging a significant rise in Black student applications to Cambridge.

Sir Simon Russell Beale will receive an Honorary Doctorate in Letters for his extraordinary contributions to theatre, film, and television. An Honorary Fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Sir Simon has earned numerous accolades, including two BAFTAs, three Laurence Olivier Awards, and a Tony Award. He was also knighted in 2019. Similarly, Professor Angela Davis, a renowned political activist, philosopher, and author, will be awarded a Doctorate in Letters. Celebrated for her advocacy of civil rights, radical feminism, and prison abolition, she is a Distinguished Professor Emerita at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and an outspoken supporter of LGBTQ+ rights.

Lady Arden of Heswall, a former Justice of the UK Supreme Court, will be conferred a Doctorate in Law for her trailblazing judicial career, which includes becoming the first female judge in the Chancery Division of the High Court. Among her notable roles, she served as Chair of the Law Commission and was appointed a Privy Counsellor in 2000. Dame Katherine Grainger, a former Olympic rower and Chair of UK Sport, will also receive a Doctorate in Law. As the only British woman to win medals in five consecutive Olympic Games, Grainger made history by becoming the first female Chair of the British Olympic Association. She also serves as Chancellor of the University of Glasgow.

Sir Oliver Hart, a Nobel Prize-winning economist, will be awarded a Doctorate in Science for his groundbreaking work on contract theory and corporate social responsibility. Currently a professor at Harvard University, he was knighted in the 2023 King’s Birthday Honours. Professor Maria Leptin, the President of the European Research Council, will be conferred a Doctorate in Medical Science. Renowned for her contributions to developmental biology and immunology, she has also held leadership positions at the European Molecular Biology Organization and the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge.

Sir John Rutter, an Honorary Fellow at Clare College and former Director of Music at the college, will receive a Doctorate in Music. As a celebrated composer, conductor, and arranger of choral music, his works have been performed worldwide. He was knighted in 2024. All eight nominees have accepted their honorary degrees, which are subject to final approval by the Regent House, the University’s governing body. The degrees will be awarded during a special Congregation on Wednesday, 25 June, presided over by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Deborah Prentice, with staff, students, alumni, and guests in attendance. This ceremony reflects Cambridge's commitment to recognizing and celebrating excellence across a wide spectrum of disciplines.
