Campion School Breaks Tradition: Transitioning to Co-Ed with Cambridge International Curriculum

Historic Shift at Campion School: After 80 Years, It Opens Doors to Girls and Global Education

Campion School, established in 1943 in Mumbai, is well-known for its rigorous curriculum and holistic approach to student development. After more than 80 years, the Jesuit-run institution has decided to adopt a co-educational model, welcoming female students for the first time, symbolizing its commitment to diversity and inclusivity. The school is also gradually shifting its curriculum from the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) to an international curriculum by introducing the Cambridge International Board prompting several structural changes to accommodate the shift.

In a ground-breaking ceremony held on 8th November to mark the beginning of this transformation, the school announced that it will open admissions for both boys and girls, starting with junior KG. The co-ed structure will gradually be implemented across all grade levels. This move is intended to create an inclusive and collaborative environment where students can learn and grow together. The shift aims to prepare them for diverse real-world situations while promoting mutual respect and understanding.

Fr. Dr. John Rose, PhD, the chairperson of the Council of Management, explained that the move to a co-ed model was partly driven by requests from parents, many of whom had struggled to find suitable schools for their daughters. Historically, Jesuit-run Catholic institutions catered to boys while nuns managed schools for girls but with changing times, educational needs must evolve, and the decision to transition to a co-educational model is part of this transformation.

The school will also change its infrastructure to provide facilities for girls and ensure their comfort in what has traditionally been a boys' school. As the school undergoes structural changes, attention will be given to modernizing the building to support the Cambridge curriculum. This includes designing classrooms that foster interaction and discussion among students. The decision to introduce an international curriculum that is made with a focus on developing critical thinking, global perspectives, and a holistic approach to education, reflecting the school’s commitment to adapting to the changing times. This shift will not only expand the student community but also enhance the learning experience for every student at Campion.

Campion School's transition to a co-educational model and adoption of the Cambridge International Board curriculum marks a significant step in its transition from its roots set up in 1943 to 2024. By embracing diversity, inclusivity, and a global outlook, the school is positioning itself to better serve the needs of future generations.
