CBSE's Move Towards Flexible Learning: Two-Level Structure for Science and Social Science

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) plans to introduce a two-level structure for Science and Social Science in Classes 9 and 10, starting from the 2026-27 academic session. This initiative, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aims to reduce academic pressure and the coaching culture by offering students the choice between standard and advanced levels based on their aptitude. The new structure follows the introduction of two levels of Mathematics (standard and basic) for Class 10 students.

The decision, made by CBSE's curriculum committee, awaits approval from the Board’s governing body. It also depends on the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) releasing new textbooks, aligned with the updated National Curriculum Framework. NCERT has already released textbooks for Classes 1, 2, 3, and 6, and is working on materials for Classes 4, 5, 7, and 8, which will be available by the 2025-26 academic session.

This two-level approach, introduced for Mathematics in 2019-20, allows students to study at either the standard or basic level, with different question papers and difficulty levels. A similar model will be applied to Science and Social Science, offering advanced-level students additional learning materials or hours, and distinct exam papers. This will help students with a strong aptitude for these subjects prepare for more advanced studies in Class 11.

The objective is to provide flexibility for students, who will be given a specific timeframe to choose their level and switch if needed. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan confirmed that new textbooks for additional classes are expected by January 2026. The CBSE's plan to introduce a two-level Science and Social Science structure aligns with the NEP 2020's vision of reducing academic pressure and providing students with more flexible learning options. This initiative promises to enhance the learning experience, ensuring students are better prepared for their education futures.
