CNLU-Leicester MoU to Promote Research, Scholarships, and Global Legal Studies
Indian Law Students Gain Access to Leicester’s LLM Programme Through CNLU Agreement
May 30, 2025 |
In recent years, academic collaborations between Indian and foreign universities have significantly transformed higher education, offering students global exposure, joint research opportunities, and internationally recognised qualifications. These partnerships facilitate student exchange programmes, dual-degree courses, and faculty collaborations, ensuring that Indian students benefit from world-class education and enhanced career prospects.
Currently, over 400 foreign universities are collaborating with Indian institutions, with the University Grants Commission (UGC) approving partnerships between 18 Karnataka universities and foreign institutions for twinning, joint, and dual-degree programmes. Such initiatives align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which advocates for global academic integration to improve learning outcomes. Against this backdrop, Chanakya National Law University (CNLU), Patna, has entered into a strategic partnership with the Law School of Leicester University, UK, through a memorandum of understanding (MoU). This agreement is designed to facilitate the admission of CNLU graduates into Leicester’s LLM programme, thereby broadening international academic opportunities for Indian students.
Under the terms of the MoU, CNLU students enrolling in Leicester’s LLM programme will receive a 30% fee concession, making overseas education more accessible. Furthermore, scholarships will be offered to support students from economically weaker backgrounds, ensuring financial constraints do not hinder their aspirations. Vice-Chancellor Prof Faizan Mustafa expressed confidence that similar agreements with other foreign universities would soon follow, creating further pathways for CNLU graduates to gain admission to globally renowned institutions.
Beyond facilitating admissions, the collaboration is expected to promote joint research initiatives and strengthen long-term academic ties between the two universities. Leicester University’s Law School, recognised for its strong research contributions and excellence in mooting competitions, is poised to offer valuable academic exposure to CNLU students. Prof Mustafa also highlighted the impact of the Supreme Court’s recent revival of the ‘three-year rule’ for judicial services exam eligibility, noting that CNLU is committed to expanding academic and professional opportunities for its students. In addition to fostering international education, the university will soon launch a Civil Services Academy to provide personalised coaching for aspirants, thereby preparing them for competitive examinations. This partnership represents a major milestone in CNLU’s endeavour to advance global academic collaboration, ensuring its students receive world-class legal education and international career opportunities.
Editor's Note:
The MOU between CNLU Patna and Leicester University marks a significant step in internationalising Indian legal education. This collaboration provides students access to quality legal education, broadens perspectives, and increases global competitiveness. Beyond a contract, the 30% fee concession and scholarships are especially beneficial for economically disadvantaged students, ensuring access to international education. With the increasing importance of comparative and international law, such partnerships will enhance India's global legal standing. While the foreign university partnership marks progress, its effective implementation is vital for student success. Access needs to extend beyond admissions to encompass academic support, mentorship, and career development, guaranteeing practical advantages from an international degree. The potential for similar agreements with other foreign institutions is positive, but CNLU must ensure these collaborations offer real benefits to students and avoid being merely symbolic.
Skoobuzz asserts that thoughtful collaboration, sustained effort, and institutional accountability will be essential for India's evolving legal education system to provide accessible and impactful global opportunities.
