Craft Coalition Highlights MSU’s Commitment to Innovation and Experiential Learning in Robotics

MSU University Strengthens Global STEM Engagement Through Student Participation in Robotics Event

In July in the year 2025, the international presence of a student-led robotics team from Morehead State University (MSU) was firmly felt. FIRST® Tech Challenge Team 20694-Craft Coalition was among Kentucky's best teams selected to travel to Eindhoven, Netherlands, to attend the inaugural FTC European Premier Event. Hosted by the Netherlands, the competition attracted 96 premier robotics teams from over 25 countries, with an overwhelming focus on global excellence in robotics engineering and STEM education.

The team became representatives of the Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics, a dual-credit programme based at MSU. The group included Dr Rachel Rogers, Assistant Professor of Research and Craft QEP mentor, in addition to Academic Adviser Kathryn Davis. Recent graduates and students currently studying at universities across Kentucky, who have demonstrated excellence in both academic and technical skills, joined the team.

Importantly, the event was not only a competition. The students were also able to visit Thermo Fisher Scientific, the world leader in laboratory innovation. Here, they witnessed the high-tech laboratories in action and saw how academic research translates to the real world. This visit solidified the need for students to join learned material with its applied counterpart, and this is one of the cornerstones of MSU's STEM education philosophy.

They also visited one of the best engineering schools in Europe, the Eindhoven University of Technology. This was an invaluable opportunity for students to gather insights on international research and career pathways, displaying how European universities partner with MSU in technology research international avenue for students to pursue when furthering their search for graduate schools. An eye-opener for both Olivia Robinson, a sophomore from the city of Mt. Sterling, and others, was almost a very great opportunity for her to fly internationally for the first time, representing Craft Academy. She stated that meeting teams from across the globe was enlightening to her as she was coming to learn how science and technology allow people to link across cultures.

Robinson further commented that one was able to reflect on some deeper lessons throughout the repairs. To her, building a robot was just a small part; a lot of focus was on creativity, working in teams, and developing as an individual. The spirit of her words reinforced the Craft Academy's mission of promoting excellence through hands-on learning and innovation. Also, the students had a tour of several cultural sites in Eindhoven, including Saint Catherine's Church. This would go a long way in broadening their perspectives and creating global awareness, which is a plus these days. Dr Rogers added that for the students, the experience created foundations for lifelong relationships, new perspectives, and inspirations. It helped sharpen their conceptual and practical skills in leadership, adaptability, and collaboration skills, which will benefit them all in their academic and professional lives.

She again affirmed the commitment of the Craft Academy towards experiential learning. Robotics remains a key component of the Academy's curriculum to achieve MSU's overall mission of enhancing innovation in robotics engineering and preparing students for upcoming ST-and-TRC future careers. This is the Craft Academy at MSU University, a residential dual-credit programme for Kentucky high school students who are gifted academically and in their junior and senior years. The students spend their last two years in secondary school taking university courses. The programme is well known for its academic rigour and project-based STEM education, design thinking, and civic engagement.
