CU Punjab Launches Academic Series Featuring Professor Oksala’s Critique of Neoliberalism Through Foucault’s View

Professor Johanna Oksala and Arthur J.Schmitt, Professor of Philosophy at Loyola University, Chicago delivered an insightful and captivating talk at the inaugural lecture of the "Lecture Series on Languages, Literature, Culture, and Theory" which was successfully organized by the English Department at the Central University of Punjab (CU Punjab). Under the auspices of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari, the hybrid event was organized and directed by Dr. Vipan Pal Singh, Head of the English Department of CU Punjab. This event sparked active discussions and intellectual engagement among the participants.

The event started with the opening statement of Dr. Singh highlighting the importance of Michel Foucault’s ontology in the study of modern neoliberalism which is undoubtedly a valuable framework for philosophical inquiry. The center of discussion of this event was "Michel Foucault and Critiques of Neoliberalism”, Michel Foucault (1926-1984) was a prominent French philosopher, social scientist, and historian, as well as the key figure in poststructuralism and postmodernism, whose ideas and research had a profound impact on various fields

Professor Oksala did a thorough examination by looking at the state's role, the subject's composition, and the purpose of truth as she investigated Foucault's critique of neoliberalism. She also addressed Wendy Brown's important criticism of Foucault's political theory, providing a thoughtful refutation of these points of contention. The professor answered audience questions and offered more context for the subjects covered in the interactive session. The event coordinator, Dr. Shahila Zafar, expressed gratitude during the vote of thanks, and the school's dean, prof. Alpna Saini commended the staff and the event's coordinators Drs. Dinesh Babu and Rohit Yadav for organizing the event so well.

Participants in the workshop included enthusiastic faculty members, research experts, and students from the School of Languages, Literature, and Culture. The inaugural lecture marks the beginning of other important discussions on language, literature, and cultural theory, which laid the foundation for rich academic discussions in the coming months.

Editor’s Note:

"Lecture Series on Languages, Literature, and Culture" at Central University of Punjab aims to examine important topics and initiate thought-provoking conversations in these important areas. Professor Johanna Oksala, the Arthur J. Schmitt Professor of Philosophy at Loyola University Chicago, gave a fantastic talk to start the series. Her enlightening discussion of Michel Foucault's criticisms of neoliberalism offered a comprehensive examination of how Foucault's concepts interact with modern socio-economic theories. This series aims to create a space where academics, students, and the larger community may interact extensively with important theoretical and cultural subjects.

Skoobuzz anticipates that these talks will stimulate more discussion and investigation, enhancing understanding of languages, literature, and cultural theory.
