New PGT Positions to Tackle Issues in Delhi's Special Education System.

Approval of 200 PGT Posts for Enhancing Support for Children with Disabilities.

Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has approved the creation of 200 additional posts for Post Graduate Teachers in Delhi's government schools. These positions, set at the secondary and senior secondary levels, will be filled regularly and offer a pay scale of level 8 (Rs. 47,600- Rs. 1,51,100) as stated by Raj Niwas. This decision aims to address concerns related to favoritism, corruption, violations of reservation norms, and employee harassment often associated with non-permanent posts, according to the lieutenant governor's office.

Over 9,500 children with Disabilities are enrolled in classes 9 to 12 in Delhi government schools. However, there are only 283 postgraduate teachers (PGTs) for special education, compared to 301 sanctioned posts, leaving many students underserved. In the capital, 609 government schools cater to CwD at the senior secondary level, but the shortage of special education teachers has made it challenging for these institutions to meet the daily inclusive education needs of their students effectively. The newly approved posts will strengthen the existing workforce, ensuring that the government's inclusive education policies are in line with the Right to Education Act 2009, the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016, and the National Education Policy 2020.

This decision stems from a collaborative assessment led by the Directorate of Education, in consultation with the Administrative Reform, Planning, and Finance Departments of the Delhi government. LG Saxena has also stressed the need to fill vacant positions in government schools promptly through exams conducted by the DSSSB. The ongoing recruitment drive is expected to address additional vacancies for Post Graduate Teachers, Trained Graduate Teachers, and Nursery Teachers in Delhi's government schools.

Editor's Note:

In a significant move to bolster special education in Delhi, the Lieutenant Governor has approved the creation of 200 additional Post Graduate Teacher positions. This initiative is designed to address longstanding issues related to non-permanent posts, including favoritism and corruption, ensuring a more equitable and effective educational environment for Children with Disabilities. With over 9,500 CwD currently enrolled in government schools, this decision is a crucial step toward meeting their educational needs.

Skoobuzz hopes that the step taken by LG will empower the children with special needs and they will also equally access educational resources and services.
