Tamil Nadu's Free Breakfast Scheme Expands: Fueling Young Minds with Nutritious Morning Meals

Nutritious Meal For Healthy Childhood: Tamil Nadu’s Free Breakfast Scheme Now in Government-Aided Schools

In a radical move to combat childhood hunger and boost educational outcomes, Tamil Nadu has extended its pioneering free breakfast scheme to government-aided schools. This scheme will benefit thousands of young learners by providing them with wholesome meals to start their day. According to the Poshan Tracker of the Government of India, 43 lakh children, constituting 7.7% of the total population, were found to be malnourished, with 14 lakh categorised as severely malnourished. In Tamil Nadu alone, there are 1.78 lakh undernourished children, a staggering figure that underscores the urgent need for such initiatives.

On July 15, the day of the former chief minister K Kamaraj's birth, current chief minister MK Stalin declared that the Morning Breakfast Scheme will now be available to state-funded schools. Students will receive breakfast for free as part of the program. Following the news, 2,33,536 pupils from 3,995 government-aided elementary schools around the state will be benefited. According to official data, the government primary school student initiative was introduced on September 15, 2022, and it has benefited around 1.14 lakh kids from 1,545 schools. Chief Minister MK Stalin chose to expand the program to include government-aided schools and government elementary schools throughout Tamil Nadu based on its popularity. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Stalin, the supremo, dined with the St. Anne's School students following the announcement.

Stalin took a moment to call out the Center over the  National Education Policy (NEP) and the NEET paper leak while he was speaking at the event. The Dravidian Model Government and Stalin personally wanted all the obstacles in the way of Tamil Nadu students’ education, whether it be hunger, NEET or the Union Government’s new education policy will be removed as a priority. When Stalin objected to NEET, he was questioned. However, in light of the NEET exam's current administration, even the Supreme Court is raising concerns. Students are demonstrating, and several national authorities, including chief ministers, are opposing NEET. Following Tamil Nadu's lead, the entire nation of India is against NEET, he continued.

"For political reasons, the Center is discussing the emergency in Parliament. The chief minister of Tamil Nadu asked, "But what the state government is asking them, is the Union  ready to move back education from the concurrent list, which was done during the emergency, back to the state list?" Additionally, MK Stalin urged students to focus on their education, arguing that knowledge was the one asset that was impervious to theft. The leader of the DMK further promised to keep up legal and political demonstrations against NEET and NEP. This ambitious initiative of the Free Breakfast Scheme underscores the state's unwavering commitment to nurturing the minds and bodies of its students, setting a new benchmark for inclusive welfare and educational excellence in India.
