Gargaon College Hosts Workshop on Sustainable Tea Cultivation

Fostering Dialogue and Implementing Practices for Environmental Preservation and Economic Growth

Gargaon College's Department of Commerce recently hosted an enlightening workshop on sustainable tea cultivation and capacity building in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell, Gargaon College, Science and Technology, the Government of Assam, and the All Assam Small Tea Growers Association. The event featured Dr. Gautam Kr Saikia, a distinguished professor from Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat, who emphasized the strategic significance of enhancing tea leaf quality to secure better market prices. Dr. Arundhati Bordoloi from Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sivasagar, highlighted the importance of improving soil quality for increased tea production, emphasizing the crucial link between soil health and overall sustainability in tea cultivation.

The workshop, inaugurated by Dr. Sabyasachi Mahanta, Principal of Gargaon College, witnessed insightful discussions among students, faculty, and local tea industry enthusiasts. Anchored by Gautom Hazarika, the event saw active participation from notable guests including Achyut Prasad Gogoi of CISTA and Rajesh Kumar Dutta, General Secretary of the All Assam Small Tea Growers’ Association, among others, who shared practical experiences and enriched the dialogue on sustainable tea cultivation practices.

The workshop concluded with a shared commitment to implementing sustainable practices in tea cultivation, recognizing its pivotal role in environmental preservation and economic sustainability. Gargaon College's initiative in hosting this workshop underscores its dedication to providing holistic education and fostering dialogue on crucial issues impacting local industries. The knowledge disseminated during the event is poised to contribute significantly to the college’s ongoing efforts in promoting sustainable practices and capacity building in the tea cultivation sector.

Assam is a state renowned for its tea cultivation. Developing sustainable cultivation methods is essential to improve soil and leaf quality and avoid degradation of the environment due to over-exploitation.
