Kalai Thiruvizha Expansion Aims to Increase Student Participation and Lower Dropout Rates!

Chennai Students Set for Educational Tour in Hong Kong, Thanks to Kalai Thiruvizha Success

Rewarding students is a powerful way to ignite excitement and passion for learning. When students' achievements are celebrated, it boosts confidence and motivates them to perform better by engaging deeply in their studies. Kalai Thiruvizha 2023 competition winners Deepali Ganesan and 19 other government elementary school pupils from Krishnagiri, Madurai, Theni, Salem, Pudukottai, Erode, and Coimbatore took a flight to Hong Kong on 23 August 2024, creating a buzz of excitement at the Chennai airport as they prepared for a week-long educational tour.

Students were rewarded for placing first in several state-level competitions such as debate, dance, music, and sports. Their tour will explore Disneyland, Ocean Park, the University of Hong Kong, Po Lin Monastery, the Old Clock Tower, and the Grand Buddha Statue. Instructor Sankar Ganesh mentioned that the students would interact with students and faculty from the University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Baptist University and would learn about marine and land animals during this visit.

Kalai Thiruvizha competition seeks to increase student participation in sports, arts, and culture in Classes I–VI. Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, the minister of school education, mentioned that ₹3 crore was invested in this program aiming to lower student drop-out rates and raise co-curricular involvement. August 2024 marks the start of the next season of this competition, and organizers are pushing schools to boost participation. Only 34% of Chennai's pupils participate in these activities at the moment, because of a lack of finance. The government is expanding this event by adding more government-aided schools after August month.

Editor’s Note:

The Kalai Thiruvizha competition awarded the winners a week-long educational tour to Hong Kong and fulfilled the dreams of Deepanjali Ganessan and 19 other government school students who only read books about Disneyland. This competition is aimed to reduce dropout rates while enhancing student engagement in sports, arts, and culture. The initiative, which has received a considerable investment of ₹3 crore, is expected to grow and encompass government-aided schools to encourage broader involvement.

Skoobuzz appreciates the efforts of the government to encourage students to learn by celebrating their achievements and also setting an example for other states to follow such innovative initiatives
