Harvard’s Step: Advancing International Education Through Flexible Learning

Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) has expanded its academic offerings to support professionals seeking advanced education in international policy and management. Recognising the difficulties faced by individuals who cannot relocate or pause their careers, HGSE has introduced the International Education and Policy Management (IEPM) Pathway, a specialised track within its Online Master’s in Education Leadership (OEL) Programme.

Initially launched in 2021, the OEL Programme was designed to serve education professionals through distinct pathways focused on PreK–12 and Higher Education within the U.S. education system. With the introduction of the IEPM Pathway, the programme now extends its reach, offering a flexible yet rigorous learning experience tailored to individuals engaged in global education policy and leadership. This initiative aims to equip students with the necessary skills to tackle international educational challenges effectively. The IEPM Pathway, a part-time, two-year programme, will enrol 65 students in its inaugural cohort starting in the autumn. Academic Dean Martin West highlighted that this addition builds upon the success of previous OEL pathways, utilising HGSE faculty’s extensive international research expertise to expand online learning opportunities globally.

Professor Fernando Reimers, co-director of IEPM, emphasised that the programme aligns with global efforts to transform education. He explained that it seeks to connect experienced education professionals who aspire to strengthen their leadership within a diverse network of changemakers. Moreover, he noted that students would be able to apply course knowledge immediately to real-world challenges, enriching discussions with practical insights.

The fully online degree incorporates a combination of asynchronous (pre-recorded) and synchronous (live) classes, along with individual and group work. Lecturer Robert Jenkins, co-director of the pathway, stated that the curriculum provides both technical skills and leadership training. With courses covering global education policy analysis and social entrepreneurship, graduates will be equipped with practical tools and a robust professional network, enabling them to drive positive change in education.

Professors Robert Jenkins and Fernando Reimers expressed enthusiasm about expanding Harvard’s OEL Programme to include a global focus. Jenkins described his involvement as an opportunity to cultivate a network of professionals committed to improving education systems worldwide. He further noted that the pathway would amplify collective impact by fostering collaboration and skill-building among participants. Similarly, Reimers shared his excitement about co-leading the pathway with Jenkins and working alongside faculty members. He emphasised that the initiative offers valuable opportunities to engage with global changemakers and prepare future leaders dedicated to advancing education for children and young people. With this expansion, HGSE continues to strengthen its commitment to providing accessible and impactful education, ensuring professionals worldwide can contribute meaningfully to the future of global learning.
