Convocation 2025: IIT Guwahati Reinforces National and Global Standing
Record Number of Graduates and Startups Highlight IIT Guwahati’s Growth

The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG), a premier institution in science and technology, commemorated its 27th convocation on 13 July 2025. This landmark occasion celebrated the graduation of 2,093 students from diverse academic streams, notably including the first-ever BTech cohort from the Mehta School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, underscoring the institute’s growing emphasis on emerging disciplines.
According to the official release, the graduating class consisted of 1,005 undergraduate students from BTech and BDes programmes, alongside 556 postgraduates from MTech and MDes streams. Moreover, 270 research scholars were conferred degrees across PhD and integrated Master’s + PhD programmes. In addition, 172 students earned MSc degrees, 51 completed MA programmes, 18 received MS (Research) degrees, and 21 students graduated with MBAs.
To honour academic excellence, the institute presented several prestigious awards. Sreehari C. (BTech, Computer Science and Engineering) received the President of India Gold Medal for attaining the highest academic score. Meanwhile, Abhishek Gautam (Engineering Physics) was awarded the Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal. Anubhav (MTech, Mechanical Engineering) and Souraja Kundu (BTech, Electronics and Communication Engineering) were honoured with the Governor of Assam Gold Medals for the postgraduate and undergraduate categories, respectively. Furthermore, sixteen students received Institute Silver Medals in recognition of their outstanding academic performance.
Delivering the convocation address, Director Prof. Devendra Jalihal reaffirmed IIT Guwahati’s robust academic standing. He highlighted the institute’s continued success in the NIRF India Rankings 2024, where it secured 7th position among engineering institutions, 9th overall, and 10th in research. On the global front, he noted that IITG ranked 42nd in Research Citations per Faculty and 334th overall in the QS World University Rankings 2026. In addition to its academic achievements, the institute has significantly contributed to innovation and entrepreneurship. Over its 31-year legacy, IIT Guwahati has produced more than 24,700 graduates. In the most recent academic year, it secured 338 consultancy projects and 22 sponsored research initiatives.
Further strengthening its role in regional development, the institute has incubated over 60 startups across sectors such as healthcare, agritech, defence, clean technology, and fintech. To foster a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem in the Northeast, it has also launched key initiatives, including the Northeast Innovators’ Catalyst Program, SPARSH, the Startup Seminar Series, and the AquaTech Innovators Hackathon. The 27th convocation not only celebrated academic accomplishment but also reaffirmed IIT Guwahati’s growing influence in research, innovation, and regional development.
