IIT Kanpur Wins STEM Impact Awards for Third Time, Recognized for Haptic Smart Watch Technology
IIT Kanpur Leads Innovation with Diverse Patent Filings and Global Presence

IIT Kanpur filed a record 152 Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) in 2024, the highest in a single year, continuing an upward trend for the fourth consecutive year, according to an Institute statement. With a total of 1,200 IPRs, the institute maintained a licensing rate of 12.91% in 2024. The filings include 124 patents, 10 design registrations, two copyrights, and six trademarks. IIT Kanpur also expanded its global presence with seven US patents, two in China, and one in Europe.
The university IPR filings span various fields, including medtech and nanotechnology, with notable inventions such as a transdermal patch for drug delivery, Kryptoceler for cryptographic acceleration, and a chop saw metal-cutting machine. Other significant patents from IIT Kanpur include a hybrid-powered electric tower car and a contactless automated tool for measuring crack growth. In 2024, the institute also saw a notable rise in granted IPRs, with 217 previously filed IPRs being granted.
Notable patents granted include a smart electric meter, a portable medical suction device, a quadcopter drone with a folding mechanism, a broadband angular momentum detector for quantum tech, and a process for ultra-thin polymer electrolyte fabrication. IIT-K has also licensed seven technologies and launched two products: the “Air Sampling Device” and “Metamaterial Cloaking System” underscoring its dedication to translating research into practical solutions.
IIT Kanpur was also awarded the STEM Impact Awards 2024 for its influential technology transfer initiatives. This marks the third time the institute has received the prestigious STEM Impact award. This year, the award recognized the university for the technology transfer of the ‘Haptic Smart Watch for Blind & Visually Impaired,’ which has had a significant socio-economic impact. IIT Kanpur's remarkable achievements in filing a record number of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) and its continued global presence highlight its commitment to innovation and research excellence.
