IIT Roorkee and SamSU Join Forces to Tackle Global Environmental Challenges
IIT Roorkee and Samarkand State University Commit to Joint Research Initiatives

The international collaboration in Indian education is paving the way for not only academic excellence and research for students but it is significantly addressing global issues also. To strengthen Indo-Uzbek academic collaboration, the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) has recently signed two significant agreements with Samarkand State University (SamSU).
The agreements include a Letter of Intent to establish a Joint Master’s Degree Program (JMDP) and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at promoting research and collaboration in areas such as hydrology, environmental science, sustainable energy, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Joint Master’s Degree Program (JMDP), developed between the Department of Hydrology at IIT Roorkee and the Department of Hydrometeorology at Samarkand State University, is aimed to address global challenges such as water scarcity, climate change, and environmental degradation. The students and faculty members of SamSU will gain advanced knowledge in water resource management and sustainability.
Additionally, IIT Roorkee will leverage its extensive expertise to offer practical solutions to real-world issues in hydrology and related fields in Uzbekistan. The agreements were officially signed by Prof. Khalmuradov Rustam Ibragimovich, Rector of Samarkand State University, and Prof. Kamal Kishore Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, with faculty members from both institutions present to witness the occasion. Prof. Pant emphasized that this collaboration will lead to sustainable solutions for water and environmental challenges, enhancing academic excellence and societal impact. Prof. Ibragimovich highlighted that the agreements reflect the commitment of both institutions to tackle urgent climate issues and to create a platform for innovative research and education.
Other notable speakers included Prof. Vimal Chandra Srivastava, the Dean of International Relations at IIT Roorkee, who stressed the significance of the partnership in broadening IIT Roorkee's international presence and promoting cross-cultural academic exchanges. Dr. Muhtor Nasirov, Vice-Rector of International Relations at SAMSU, expressed optimism about the collaboration's potential to advance global environmental sustainability and foster joint innovations. Meanwhile, Prof. Naveen Navani, Dean of Academic Affairs at IIT Roorkee, noted that the MoUs will open up new avenues for student and faculty exchanges, research initiatives, and knowledge-sharing.
