Imperial UK University Showcases Science, Technology, and Entrepreneurship on a World Stage

At the forefront of global technology and innovation, Imperial College London made a commanding impact during this year’s London Tech Week, one of Europe’s most influential tech events. As part of the broader global tech community, Imperial College London showcased its leadership in science, technology, and sustainability through active engagement across panels, exhibits, and partnerships, solidifying its position among the world's ranking universities and premier tech institutions.

A key moment was a panel hosted by Rio Tinto, where Professor Mary Ryan, Vice-Provost for Research and Enterprise, highlighted the essential role of critical minerals in clean energy transitions. She also introduced the Rio Tinto Centre for Future Materials, an ambitious innovation hub at Imperial College London, supported by a $150 million commitment over ten years. This initiative exemplifies how innovation and industry-academic collaboration can reshape sustainable resource use.

Expanding its international footprint, London Imperial partnered with the British High Commission in India to host a session on cross-border entrepreneurship. Dr Elena Dieckmann, Academic Co-Director of Imperial Global India, discussed strategies to scale ventures between global ecosystems and underscored the university's Bengaluru presence as a key university campus in fostering ties with top Indian university institutions.

One standout presentation came from Antoinette Nothomb, Co-Founder of Cyanoskin and graduate of Imperial Business School, who detailed her company’s journey in creating carbon-absorbing algae coatings for buildings. The firm’s success, rooted in the White City tech hub, speaks to the robust entrepreneurial support provided by programmes like Undaunted and The Greenhouse.

The event also spotlighted advancements in medical technology, a defining pillar of Imperial’s work. Through collaborations with the University of Hertfordshire and Cranfield University, Imperial led the Healthcare Technologies Capability Connector, demonstrating how technology and innovation can directly benefit clinical outcomes and patient care. As part of the British Land panel, Hiten Thakrar, Head of the MedTech SuperConnector, shared insights on translating science and technology into impactful healthcare startups.
