Innovative Student Projects Address Sustainable Development Goals at Imperial College's STEM-a-thon

Imperial College London hosted its inaugural two-day STEM-a-thon competition for high school students in New Delhi on December 7-8, attracting widespread participation from schools across India. Aimed at showcasing young talent, the event allowed students aged 15-17 to develop innovative STEM solutions aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Organized in collaboration with EduQuest by Silver Fern Education Consultants, the competition marked a strong debut for Imperial College in India, ranked second globally in the QS 2025 rankings.

EduQuest by Silver Fern Education Consultants is an experiential learning-focused subsidiary of Silver Fern and offers academic short courses that promote holistic development in collaboration with top-ranked global universities. The competition encouraged students to address challenges related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and create scalable solutions. Notable projects included innovations in gut health, and wellness, generating electricity from waste, glasses that convert text into speech, and plastic bricks from recycled materials. The students' dedication to developing sustainable solutions was truly inspiring.

Ahead of the event, students were mentored by school faculty and experts from Imperial College London. Over 60 teams from top Indian schools participated including The Lawrence Lovedale School, Bombay International School, Step by Step, Calcutta International School, and Ascend International School. The event concluded with an exciting finale, where the winning team received 800 GBP per member for travel to London for the Global Natural Sciences and Innovation Competition finals at Imperial College in the summer of 2025, along with Letters of Recommendation from the visiting faculty.

The event showcased the creativity and commitment of Indian high school students towards sustainable solutions. In the guidance of experts, this event successfully fostered innovation and collaboration in the STEM field.
