India Shines at IMO 2025 with Six Medals and Record-Breaking Score

Indian Team Ranks 7th Globally at 66th International Mathematical Olympiad

India’s outstanding performance at the 66th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2025, held in Sunshine Coast, Australia, once again affirmed the country’s growing reputation in global mathematics. As the world’s premier competition for high school students, the IMO attracts top mathematical talent from over 110 countries, each sending a team of six students to solve six advanced problems over two days, covering areas such as algebra, number theory, combinatorics, and geometry. With a maximum individual score of 42, the total team score stands at 252.

In this highly demanding setting, the Indian team delivered a remarkable result, securing six medals, three gold, two silver, and one bronze, which highlights the nation’s strengthening presence in international mathematical circles. The gold medals were awarded to Kanav Talwar, Aarav Gupta, and Adhitya Mangudy; Abel George Mathew and Aadish Jain won silver, while Archit Manas earned bronze. Collectively, the team achieved a cumulative score of 193, India’s highest-ever tally since joining the IMO in 1989, marking its 35th year of participation.

This achievement reflects not only individual brilliance but also the progress of India’s national training infrastructure. The Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research coordinated the selection, training, and preparation of the team. The 2025 delegation was led by Professor Shanta Laishram of ISI Delhi and Dr Mainak Ghosh of ISI Bengaluru, with two observers, Atul Shatavart Nadig, a BS student at MIT, and Dr Rijul Saini—joining the team to support its journey.

India’s recent IMO history has shown clear improvement. This was only the second occasion the country secured three golds, the first being in 1998, and the third instance of finishing 7th overall, matching previous ranks in 1998 and 2001. Notably, India’s best-ever rank of 4th came in 2024, when the team earned four golds. Between 2019 and 2025, Indian students collected 12 gold medals, with nine awarded in the last three years alone, underscoring a consistent upward trend in national performance. With 630 students competing globally, India’s success in this edition stands as a powerful testament to its growing excellence in mathematics and the strength of its educational initiatives. India’s results at IMO 2025 reflect a blend of exceptional talent and a robust support system, marking its place among the world’s top mathematical contenders.
