Karnataka Introduces Chevening Scholarship to Support Female Students in Government Colleges

Chevening Karnataka Masters Scholarship to Empower Women with Global Education Opportunities

Under the Chevening Karnataka Masters Scholarship programme, five female graduates from the state will have the opportunity to study at prestigious universities in the United Kingdom each year. A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between the Higher Education Department and the British High Commission, India, on 16 December. Chevening has been the UK government’s international award programme to develop global leaders since its inception in 1983. This programme operates in 160 countries, with more than 3,900 alumni in India alone as stated by Chandru Iyer, the British Deputy High Commissioner to Karnataka and Kerala. He added that Karnataka, being the first South Indian state to embrace the Chevening initiative, has greatly benefited first-generation learners from tier-2 and tier-3 towns and cities.

Higher Education Minister MC Sudhakar stated that priority would be given to female students from government-run colleges for the scholarship. Additionally, 15 students would be offered fully-funded scholarships to study in the UK over the next three years. However, the state government will contribute Rs 20 lakh per student for one-year master’s programmes while the remaining expenses will be covered by the Chevening Scholarship.

The Chevening Karnataka Masters Scholarship programme presents a significant opportunity for female graduates from the state, particularly those from government colleges, to pursue higher education at top UK universities. This initiative will empower women and support first-generation learners, marking an important step in Karnataka's educational development.
