Kerala took a Step towards Higher Academic Standards

In a recent decision on 7 August, the Kerala Cabinet has ratified a new mandate requiring students to achieve a minimum of 30% marks to clear school examinations. This step marks a significant shift in the state's educational assessment approach and will standardize the academic performance criteria. One of the recommendations from an education conclave held in May this year was to set minimum marks for all subjects in the annual examinations for Classes 8, 9, and 10. Despite previous criticism from pro-Left teachers' organizations in the state, the Cabinet has ratified this recommendation.
Under this new policy, a minimum mark requirement will be introduced for Class 8 starting this academic year. It will be implemented for Class 9 in the 2025-26 academic year and for Class 10 in the 2026-27 academic year. This policy follows recommendations to enhance educational standards and ensure that students demonstrate a fundamental understanding before progressing to a new level.
 

In the current grading system, a Class 10 student must score at least 20 out of 80 marks in each subject to qualify for higher education. Previously, students needed only 10 marks out of 80 and 5 marks out of 40 to pass their written exams. This lenient grading system was introduced to promote all students and reduce dropout rates. According to the perspective of the Kerala government, the new policy will drive academic excellence and accountability. Setting a minimum pass percentage is crucial for maintaining educational standards and preparing students effectively for future academic and professional challenges.
 

The introduction of this new policy is expected to have numerous implications. On one hand, it aims to standardize academic achievements and ensure that students possess a requisite level of knowledge.
