Loughborough Celebrates Four Decades of Sporting Excellence at BUCS

Unbroken Streak: Loughborough Reigns Supreme in UK University Sport

Loughborough University has once again cemented its status as the UK’s leading institution for university sport, securing the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) overall title for the 44th consecutive year. This extraordinary achievement was formally announced at the BUCS Annual Awards Dinner, where the university’s sustained excellence was applauded by peers and sporting leaders across the higher education sector.

Renowned for its comprehensive sporting infrastructure and elite performance culture, Loughborough demonstrated dominance across a wide array of disciplines, including women’s tennis, men’s water polo, netball, basketball, rugby union, and hockey. These victories reflect not only the calibre of its athletes but also the strength of its coaching, facilities, and support systems. Director of Sport Louise Gear attributed the title to the collective efforts of athletes, coaches, staff, and volunteers, expressing pride in their achievements and the lasting memories created throughout the season. Echoing this sentiment, Professor Jo Maher, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Sport, highlighted the university’s global sporting reputation and praised the teams’ resilience in maintaining consistent success year after year.

In addition to the overall title, student Eliz Maloney was named Sportswoman of the Year for her exceptional tennis season, which included leading Great Britain to silver at the BNP Paribas University World Cup and securing titles in both BUCS and ITF competitions. Meanwhile, Joel Moore received the Chris Potter Student Volunteer Award for his outstanding contribution, having logged 3,425 volunteer hours across various sporting roles.

Loughborough also hosted BUCS Big Wednesday for the second consecutive year, drawing nearly 2,500 spectators to its East Midlands campus. The event was delivered with the support of over 100 student volunteers from the university’s Coach and Volunteer Academy (CVA), showcasing the depth of engagement and organisational excellence within the institution. With BUCS overseeing more than 50 sports across 170 universities, involving over 6,000 teams and individual competitors annually, Loughborough’s continued dominance stands as a benchmark of sporting achievement in UK higher education. This milestone reinforces Loughborough’s legacy as the undisputed powerhouse of university sport in Britain.
