AI University in Maharashtra to Drive Research and Prepare Workforce for AI-Driven Economy

As universities worldwide embrace AI technology and integrate related courses into their curricula, India is making strides to stay at the forefront of this technological revolution. In the Indian universities’ AI race, the state of Maharashtra has taken the lead by forming a task force to plan and establish the country’s first AI university. According to State Information Technology Minister Ashish Shelar, this ambitious project promotes research and development in AI and its related fields, ultimately positioning the university as a centre of excellence. Undoubtedly, this initiative will involve collaboration between industry, academia, and government, driving innovation and technological advancement in India.

Furthermore, the 22-member task force will be chaired by the Principal Secretary of the IT department and will include experts, academicians, and industry leaders. This group will feature representatives from top-notch institutions like IIT Powai, IIT Mumbai, NASSCOM, and AI industry figures. Eminent scientists like Dr Anil Kakodkar, Naren Kachru from Google India, Bhuvan Lodha from Mahindra, and Dr Rajan Velukar, Vice-Chancellor of Atlas Skill University, will also be part of the task force.

Additionally, the minister emphasized that the initiative aligns with Prime Minister Modi's vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047 and aims to position Maharashtra as a global AI hub. The AI University project, a joint effort between the Ministry of Information & Technology and the Ministry of Higher and Technical Education, will focus on research and skill development to prepare youth for the AI-driven economy, as promised in the ruling party's election manifesto.

Moreover, Mr. Shelar stated that Maharashtra is leading India’s AI revolution as the first state to establish an AI University. The task force will play a key role in fostering innovation, advancing research, and creating a world-class AI Centre of Excellence in collaboration with the Government of India. The task force is also responsible for submitting recommendations within a month on establishing Centres of Excellence in Mumbai and across Maharashtra and enhancing AI-powered solutions for governance, industry, and society. A government official added that the initiative aims to advance AI research and technology and prepare a future-ready workforce. These efforts signify Maharashtra’s commitment to leading India's AI revolution and positioning the state as a global AI hub.
