Maharashtra has launched a statewide employment drive aimed at connecting young people with job opportunities while strengthening the link between education, skills and employment. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis launched the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Rozgar Mahakumbh at SNDT Women’s University in Mumbai on September 29, with the government highlighting opportunities both within India and in international labour markets. The initiative covers 12 districts across the Konkan and Nashik divisions and has recorded more than 25,000 registered vacancies.

Addressing the launch, Fadnavis said the state was working to connect education and skill development with employment opportunities at the international level. He pointed to demand for skilled workers in more than 28 countries and urged young people to continue developing their capabilities as technologies such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors and quantum computing reshape the workplace.

The Chief Minister said a degree by itself was increasingly being accompanied by the need for additional skills and training. He described education, training and employment as interconnected areas in efforts to develop the workforce and contribute to the goal of a developed India by 2047.

More Than One Lakh Youth Register for Employment Drive

Skill Development, Employment and Entrepreneurship Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha said more than one lakh young people had registered for the employment initiative. The programme is being extended beyond ITI students, with smaller employment fairs also being organised at the taluka level to reach candidates from different educational backgrounds.

The government has also introduced pre-employment preparation as part of the programme. According to Lodha, candidates have been provided with seven days of free training, with approximately 61,000 young people having completed the training so far.

The broader objective is to connect young people with either employment or self-employment opportunities. The employment fairs are therefore being positioned not simply as recruitment events, but as part of a wider skills and career-development effort.

More Than 25,000 Vacancies Registered by Employers

The current employment drive covers 12 districts across the Konkan and Nashik divisions, including Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Nashik, Ahilyanagar, Jalgaon, Dhule and Nandurbar. More than 1,500 employers have registered for the initiative, while the number of registered job seekers has crossed one lakh.

More than 25,000 vacancies have been registered by participating employers. Over 400 employment fairs are being organised across the two divisions with the involvement of educational institutions, colleges, government industrial training institutes, local administrations and other organisations.

The structure is intended to bring employers directly into contact with candidates while creating additional opportunities for young people who may not otherwise have access to large-scale recruitment programmes.

Training Extends Beyond Technical Qualifications

Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil said the government was working with the Skill Development Department to strengthen the connection between educational qualifications and employment.

Alongside opportunities to meet employers, candidates are being offered preparation in areas such as personality development, communication, soft skills and management skills. The training is intended to help young people approach interviews and workplace environments with a broader set of capabilities. This approach places employability alongside formal qualifications, reflecting the government’s emphasis on combining education with practical preparation for the labour market.

Maharashtra Looks to Expand Overseas Employment Opportunities

Marketing Minister Jaykumar Rawal said Maharashtra was also working towards developing the state as a global employment hub. As part of this effort, young people are expected to receive language and skills training aimed at helping them access employment opportunities outside India.

The government is also working on the ‘Mobility’ project, which seeks to connect children of farmers with industry and employment opportunities. According to the information presented at the event, ₹2,500 crore is being allocated to agriculture and marketing sectors under the project.

The focus on overseas employment comes alongside the state’s emphasis on emerging technologies and changing labour-market requirements, with officials pointing to the importance of preparing candidates for jobs that may require both technical and communication skills.

Women’s Employment Receives Separate Focus

A separate employment fair was organised for women at SNDT Women’s University, providing a dedicated setting for female job seekers to engage with employers. Thirty-six employers participated in the event, while stalls providing information about government schemes related to self-employment were also made available. The programme brought together government representatives, university officials, students and job seekers.

The initiative forms part of the wider employment drive, which seeks to create direct connections between candidates and employers while expanding access to information about employment and entrepreneurship opportunities.

Appointment Letters Distributed at Launch

The launch also included the distribution of appointment letters to selected candidates. Fadnavis handed appointment letters to Saida Paramanik and Kanti Shambhu Chavan, who were selected by Creva Capital Services Private Limited for positions at its Belapur and Kurla locations respectively.

The appointments provided a tangible outcome alongside the broader employment fair, which is designed to connect registered candidates with participating employers across multiple districts.

Editor’s Note

A job fair can look deceptively simple from the outside: employers arrive with vacancies, candidates arrive with résumés, and the hope is that the two meet at the right moment. But the Maharashtra employment drive points to a more complicated question underneath that exchange: what does it actually take for a young person to be employable in a labour market that is changing faster than traditional education systems?

The emphasis on pre-employment training, communication and soft skills alongside formal qualifications suggests that the transition from education to work is no longer being framed solely around earning a degree. The state is also looking towards international employment and emerging technologies, areas where the expectations placed on workers can change quickly. For young people, that creates both opportunity and pressure: qualifications may open the door, but continued learning increasingly determines how well they can move through it.

With more than one lakh registrations and over 25,000 vacancies reported for the current drive, the scale of participation also raises an important distinction between access to an opportunity and access to the right opportunity. Employment initiatives can create valuable connections, but their longer-term significance will depend on how effectively training, recruitment, skills and actual career progression remain connected after the job fair ends.
