Marquette University, a distinguished Catholic and Jesuit institution, is renowned for its comprehensive academic offerings across 11 nationally and internationally acclaimed colleges and schools. Dedicated to holistic development, the university shapes the intellectual and moral character of approximately 11,100 undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, and professional students, preparing them to excel as leaders and contribute meaningfully to society.
The university strongly emphasises student success through personalised and immersive learning experiences, fostering critical thinking and active engagement with real-world challenges. Ranked among the top 20% of national universities, Marquette is recognised for excellence in undergraduate teaching, innovation, and career readiness. Notably, it is ranked as the sixth-best university in the United States for job placement, affirming its reputation for academic and professional excellence.
Marquette fosters an environment that promotes academic achievement while instilling a sense of purpose and social responsibility, inspiring its graduates to "Be The Difference" in their communities and beyond. Among its distinguished students, Ryan Smith, a first-year student in the Diederich College of Communication and a member of the University Honours Program, has achieved the honour of being selected for the prestigious Fulbright Summer Institute. He will attend a three-week program at Lancaster University in the United Kingdom to study the technical and formal aspects of filmmaking, alongside broader cinematic conventions.
As part of the Fulbright program at Lancaster University, students engage in lectures, screenings, and workshops to develop a theoretical understanding of film, focusing on elements such as imagery, soundtracks, and visual techniques. Dr. Karalee Surface, fellowships coordinator at Marquette University, expressed pride in Ryan Smith’s accomplishment, noting that he is the university’s first participant in the Fulbright Summer Institute. She emphasised that the program will refine his filmmaking skills and provide enriching cross-cultural experiences to support his continued studies in film and digital media.
Selection for the Fulbright UK Summer Institute (UKSI) is highly competitive, with students chosen for their academic excellence, well-rounded applications, extracurricular involvement, and ambassadorial potential. Each year, the Fulbright Commission supports up to 60 first- and second-year U.S. undergraduates, often those with limited international experience, to participate in intensive academic and cultural programs at leading UK universities. Dr. Surface highlighted the university’s efforts to raise awareness of fellowship opportunities, noting that five students applied for the Fulbright UKSI program this year. She hopes Ryan Smith’s achievement will inspire more early-career students to explore such opportunities.
The U.S.-UK Fulbright Commission is dedicated to promoting educational exchange to advance knowledge, civic engagement, and leadership. As the only academic awards program operating in both countries, it provides grants for postgraduate study, research, and teaching. Fulbright Summer Institutes offer comprehensive support, covering program costs, pre-departure guidance, cultural enrichment in the host country, and lifetime membership in the Fulbright alumni network. This achievement reflects Marquette University's commitment to excellence and its ability to empower students to pursue distinguished opportunities globally.
Editor's Note:
Ryan Smith’s selection for the prestigious Fulbright Summer Institute stands as a shining example of Marquette University’s dedication to nurturing talent and fostering global readiness. This achievement underscores the institution’s dual commitment to academic excellence and the personal growth of its students. By emphasising immersive and tailored learning experiences, Marquette equips its scholars with the critical skills, innovation mindset, and leadership qualities essential to thrive on a global stage. Programs like the Fulbright Summer Institute open doors for aspiring leaders, offering opportunities to gain cultural awareness and contribute meaningfully to their chosen fields. Such initiatives highlight the pivotal role educational institutions play in empowering students to aspire beyond conventional limits and embrace international opportunities with confidence.
Marquette’s commitment to transformative education continues to cement its standing as a beacon of academic innovation and social responsibility. Achievements like these inspire both its students and the broader academic community, lighting the path for future generations to make a meaningful difference in the world.
