University of Science and Technology Provides Vital Support to Rolla Community Post-Tornado

Missouri S&T Hosts Multi-Agency Resource Center to Assist Tornado-Affected Residents

Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T), a renowned STEM-focused research institution serving over 7,000 students, responded promptly to the devastation caused by Rolla’s March 14 tornado. Recognised by the Wall Street Journal for its salary impact among public universities, Missouri S&T demonstrated its commitment to community support by repurposing its Student Recreation Center courts into a Multi-Agency Resource Center (MARC) on March 25-26. The center offered vital services such as counseling, financial assistance, legal aid, and demolition support, helping 136 households and 341 individuals.

During the week following the tornado, the university extended its facilities to the Rolla community. Residents were able to use laundry services at the Thomas Jefferson Residence Hall and showers at the Gale Bullman Building, with over 100 recorded uses. Various other campus locations also served as places of relief and comfort. A Missouri S&T executive assistant noted that the aftermath of the tornado had left thousands without power and described the campus’s role as a critical support hub during the crisis. The university police chief emphasised the personal connection many staff members had to the affected community and praised the MARC event for its significant impact.

In addition to emergency services, Missouri S&T hosted a community movie night, provided device charging stations and water refill spots, and organised activities like an open gym for children. The Kummer Center for STEM Education played a role in organising games and interactive sessions for families. Furthermore, the St. Pat’s Board raised $10,168 through merchandise sales and donated the funds to the American Red Cross to aid disaster relief in Phelps County.

Students, staff, and faculty members at Missouri S&T, including fraternities and sororities, volunteered tirelessly to assist with efforts such as debris removal, distributing food and water, and using drones to survey damage. A first-year aerospace engineering student expressed pride in his fraternity’s involvement, emphasising their commitment to giving back and helping in times of need. Through coordinated efforts and collaboration, Missouri S&T demonstrated its dedication to the Rolla community during a challenging time, further solidifying its role as a pillar of support and resilience.
