Recognition for MSU Theater Program Grows with Faculty Awards

Leaders in Mississippi State University’s theatre program, part of the Department of Communication, have earned faculty awards this academic year. These awards showcase the program’s excellence in theatre arts and commitment to creative achievement. Assistant Clinical Professor Jesse Wade received the Meritorious Achievement in Scenic Design award from the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) for his work on the play A Piece of My Heart. KCACTF, a national program involving 20,000 students from over 700 colleges and universities, recognises outstanding acting, design, and stage management contributions.
Assistant Professor Tonya S. Hays was honoured with the Tom Behm Award by the Southeastern Theatre Conference in the fall. The award provides professional development funds for individuals in Theatre for Youth, enabling them to attend conferences or earn educational credits. Recipients receive a $1,000 honorarium, a one-year SETC membership, and registration for the SETC Teachers Institute and annual Convention.
Terry Likes, professor and head of the Department of Communication, praised Jesse Wade and Tonya Hays for their accomplishments, which bring recognition to MSU. He commended their dedication to offering students opportunities both on stage and behind the scenes, as evidenced by internship placements, job opportunities, and graduate school applications. Over the past six years, theatre students have earned more than 150 honours, including numerous KCACTF nominations. These achievements further solidify Mississippi State University’s theatre program’s commitment to excellence, elevating its reputation and providing invaluable opportunities for students in the field of theatre arts.
