Dystopian Dreams Collection Earns National Recognition for Student Designer

University of Northampton Student Wins Top Sneaker Design Prize

In a celebration of emerging talent and creative vision, the 2025 Cordwainers Footwear Awards recognised outstanding student designers from across the UK. Among the honourees was China Blackstock-Brown, an undergraduate at the University of Northampton, whose innovative collection captivated industry leaders. Her winning entry, Dystopian Dreams, secured first place in the sneaker/athleisure category and was praised for its imaginative exploration of the boundary between dreams and nightmares.

Commenting on the achievement, Jane Schaffer, a senior lecturer, expressed the team’s delight, describing the award as the pinnacle of China’s academic journey. She highlighted China’s determination to win from the outset, adding that the recognition was a reflection of her creativity, dedication, and hard work. Furthermore, Schaffer noted that collaborating with industry professionals had provided China with invaluable experience, and the university team looked forward to watching her career evolve.

Reflecting on her win, Ms Blackstock-Brown admitted she was surprised, especially given the high calibre of other student entries. As a final-year student, she explained that her collection was inspired by nightmares, rooted in vivid childhood experiences. Her curiosity about the nature and causes of nightmares formed the foundation of her concept.

The resulting collection featured four unique and unconventional shoe designs, which she described as “a bit bonkers.” These designs were showcased during the university’s fashion show, where graduating students from the fashion, textiles, and footwear courses, including Ms Blackstock-Brown, presented their work to an audience of family, friends, staff, students, members of the public, and industry professionals. China’s success stands as a testament to her bold vision and creative flair, marking a promising start to her future in the footwear industry.

Editor’s Note:

The success of China Blackstock-Brown at the Cordwainers Footwear Awards is not only a personal achievement but also a reflection of the creativity and skill found in our universities. Her collection, Dystopian Dreams, demonstrates how thoughtful design can explore deeper ideas while staying relevant to contemporary style. At a time when the fashion and footwear industries continue to evolve, it is encouraging to see new voices challenging the norm and contributing bold, conceptual work. Blackstock-Brown’s ability to combine technical ability with imaginative storytelling is a testament to the strength of early-stage talent coming through British institutions.

Skoobuzz acknowledges that, as industry leaders increasingly look to emerging designers for fresh ideas and new perspectives, moments like these remind us of the value of nurturing student innovation. We hope this recognition inspires other young creatives to pursue their vision with confidence and conviction.
