Gurjar Highlights Impact of Combat Games on Regional Sports Development

The South Asian School Combat Games is a new multi-sport event focusing on promoting sports among school students and nurturing young talents specifically in the South Asian region. The inaugural edition recently took place in Dhaka from October 1 to 4 2024 where India emerged as the overall winner securing a remarkable total of 24 medals: 15 gold, six silver, and three bronze.

The event saw participation from five countries India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka. The event was organized by the Bangladesh School Sports Association and took place under the auspices of the South Asian School Sports Federation, the games featured various combat sports disciplines such as wushu, taekwondo, judo, and karate. The goal of these first-ever Games was to establish a sustainable sports ecosystem and nurture young talent. This initiative was conceptualized by Kanhaiya Gurjar and Nanavati Prasad.

Notable gold medalists from India included Sneha Borah, Vedaasruthi S, Thounganba, who each won three gold medals, along with Ashu Singh, who earned two golds, and Kundan Kumar, Abhijit, Krish, Sweta Rani, Borkha, and Himanshi, who also made significant contributions to the team’s success. Gurjar mentioned that organizing the event has not only helped nurture existing talent but also encouraged the emergence of new stars in various disciplines of the Combat Games. He expressed that this initiative would greatly benefit the local talent pool and promote a culture of sports and fitness in the region.
