UK Government Backs Stirling’s Role in Commonwealth Games 2026

While preparing for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next year, UK Government Minister Kirsty McNeill MP visited the University of Stirling's campus. The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Scotland, and MP for Midlothian, met with athletes and coaches for the Games, as well as several trainers with whom she discussed consideration for Scotland's best swimmers. Duncan, Scotland's best performer in the Olympic and Commonwealth Games, was recently training after returning from a victorious gold medal in the Men's 4x200m Freestyle Relay for Team Great Britain at the World Aquatics Championship. He is now preparing to reclaim his titles in the 200m Individual Medley and 200m Freestyle at the next Games.

In the future, Duncan claimed that very few athletes get a chance to compete at the home Commonwealth Games and is blessed to be doing that for the second time. He explained that 'The Games are a massive sports event, and to be in a position to host them again in Scotland is great news for the competitors, as it is for the fans.' He praised all of those involved in organising the games, and he is looking forward to competing at home and hopefully picking up more medals.

Discussing her hopes for the Games next year, double bronze medalist at the 2022 Games in Birmingham, Katie Shanahan, stated she was thrilled that the Games were being held. She stated that the Games were something that had hung in the balance for a bit and that their return to Scotland is all thanks to much work carried out behind the scenes. She went on to say that the Stirling squad is actually very focused and passionate, in a manner that would be a dream to play before relatives and friends and a career highlight.

In 2022, Scotland's University for Sporting Excellence, the University of Stirling, accredited a record number of athletes who competed at the highest Games: twenty from five nations and four sports - swimming, triathlon, judo and hockey. They came back with sixteen medallists, all their medals from the pool. Ms McNeil visited the National Swimming Academy, the top fitness areas and the National Tennis Centre.
