International Education Week at SBU: Workshops, Exhibitions, and Global Cuisine Highlight Global Diversity

Stony Brook's International Student Center Enhances Campus Connections During IEW 2024

Stony Brook University will observe International Education Week (IEW) from November 18-22, to foster global awareness and cultural exchange on campus. IEW is part of a broader initiative led by the U.S. Departments of State and Education, celebrated in over 100 countries to encourage international understanding and educational exchange. Launched in 2000, the program underscores the importance of cross-border connections in building more inclusive, globally aware communities.

The Office of Global Affairs will coordinate the event and feature various programs, workshops, and creative displays designed to highlight the significance of international education. In addition to these activities, IEW promises to offer numerous engaging opportunities for the university's nearly 3,500 international students. Stony Brook has recently established the International Student Center to better support these students, which provides a dedicated area for study and social interaction.

One of the center's distinctive features is the "Seasons of Stony Brook Tree," which changes its theme each season to showcase various cultural stories and perspectives. For example, in October, the tree focused on the theme of "Fear and Courage," inviting students to contribute by sharing personal moments of resilience through decorated ornaments.

- How to Engage and Empower Your International Students: On November 15, this workshop will provide faculty with the opportunity to discuss strategies for engaging and empowering international students within the classroom. Facilitated by the Office of Global Affairs and the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT), the session will offer practical tools to encourage active participation and support the academic success of international students.

- International Photo Exhibition: Organized for November 19, the exhibition will feature a collection of photographs taken by study-abroad alumni and international students. These images will highlight diverse countries and cultural experiences. Attendees will also be invited to vote for their favorite submissions, creating an interactive experience that takes them on a visual journey across continents.

- Cooking From Home: Zimbabwe: On November 19, as part of the week's celebration, East Side and West Side Dine-In will serve traditional Zimbabwean dishes, giving students and staff a chance to explore the culture through its cuisine. This event will offer a unique opportunity to taste and learn about the flavors of Zimbabwe.

- Passport to the World: Starting November 20, this event will celebrate global cultures, allowing attendees to hear from international students about their countries and customs. In addition, guests will enjoy free international candy and popcorn, creating a fun and engaging way to learn about different cultures.

- Summer in Greece Information Session: Also on November 20, students interested in studying abroad are invited to attend an information session about the Summer in Greece program. This immersive experience allows students to earn academic credits while exploring Greece’s rich historical and cultural heritage.

- A Day in the Life Video Contest: Launching on November 22, this contest invites both alumni and current students to submit videos capturing a day at Stony Brook University or abroad. The winners will receive a $50 Wolfie Wallet credit, and their videos will be featured on the university's social media platforms.
