How the New UGC Framework for SWAYAM Courses Will Impact Students and Institutions
Balancing Online Learning: UGC’s Updated SWAYAM Framework Explained
Sep 03, 2024 |
Universities eligible for the SWAYAM-based credit courses framework include those listed under Section 2(f) of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956, and those that have adopted SWAYAM Courses for Credit Transfer according to the UGC (Credit Framework for Online Learning Courses through Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) Regulations, 2021.
Universities conducting end-term examinations for SWAYAM courses must:
- Ensure that the number of credits for SWAYAM courses aligns with those prescribed on the SWAYAM platform.
- Preparing question papers, evaluation of answer scripts, and declaration of results for the end-term exams.
- Permit those students to take the end-term examination who have completed the entire SWAYAM course and submitted at least 75% of the assignments and quizzes.
According to UGC guidelines, universities must allocate 70% of the weightage to end-term examinations. The remaining 30% weightage is assigned to assignments and quizzes, which are managed by the SWAYAM Course Coordinator and can be viewed on the SWAYAM portal.
Nodal Officers are responsible for:
- Obtaining credentials and registering on the SWAYAM portal to access student details.
- Monitoring internal assignment and quiz scores, and preparing eligibility lists for university exams.
- Conduct end-term exams and upload marks on the SWAYAM portal.
- Ensure student marks are linked to their APAAR ID and visible to them.
- List students who failed or missed exams and arrange re-examinations as needed.

Editor's Note:
The UGC's new framework for SWAYAM courses aims to integrate online learning more effectively into higher education. This initiative will benefit students by recognizing SWAYAM courses for academic credit and balancing assessment with 70% weight on end-term exams and 30% on assignments and quizzes. Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) must now facilitate these exams, manage assessments, and ensure accurate documentation of student progress.
Skoobuzz hopes that this move of UGC will enhance both the flexibility and credibility of online education.
