Global Talent Taskforce Unveiled to Strengthen UK’s Innovation Ecosystem

The global race for innovation is increasingly shaped by a nation’s capacity to attract and retain exceptional talent. In response, the United Kingdom has taken a decisive step with the launch of its Global Talent Taskforce, supported by a £54 million investment. Announced on 22 June, this initiative forms a central component of the UK Government’s Plan for Change, which seeks to stimulate economic growth through science, technology, and innovation.
The Taskforce is designed to attract and relocate highly skilled professionals across research, entrepreneurship, engineering, and the creative industries. By leveraging the UK’s international networks, it aims to establish a robust global talent pipeline, thereby reinforcing the country’s ambition to lead in innovation. Moreover, the initiative aligns with the forthcoming Industrial Strategy, enhancing domestic capabilities through the acquisition of global expertise.
Additionally, the government confirmed that this effort builds on the commitments outlined in the recent Immigration White Paper. These include expanding the list of eligible institutions for the High Potential Individual visa and fast-tracking top talent into strategic sectors such as science and technology. Complementing this, the newly announced Global Talent Fund will cover relocation and research costs for world-class researchers over five years. Administered through UKRI, leading universities and research institutions will be responsible for selecting candidates aligned with the initiative’s objectives and the broader Industrial Strategy.
Furthermore, the government emphasised that these measures are intended to boost investment, generate skilled employment, and uphold strong border control. Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds reiterated the UK’s commitment to becoming the premier destination for global talent, particularly in fields such as medicine and emerging technologies, to drive economic growth and benefit the workforce.
Echoing this sentiment, Science and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle highlighted the UK’s infrastructure, skills base, and international partnerships as key enablers for transforming ideas into impactful innovations. He described the initiatives as a reflection of the Plan for Change and extended an invitation to global innovators to collaborate with the UK. To support this vision, the Global Talent Taskforce, reporting directly to the Prime Minister and Chancellor, will facilitate the relocation of top researchers, entrepreneurs, and creatives. Additionally, the National Academies have launched two fast-track research grants: £30 million through the Royal Society’s Faraday Discovery Fellowship and further support via the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Green Future Fellowships, both aimed at maintaining the UK’s competitive edge in global science and research.
This announcement follows the introduction of two further fellowship programmes: the £25 million Turing AI Global Fellowships and an expanded Encode: AI for Science Fellowship, which will place leading AI researchers in top UK laboratories. The first cohort is expected to begin by autumn 2025. Altogether, the government is committing over £115 million to attracting world-class talent to the UK. This comprehensive investment signals the UK’s strategic intent to position itself as a global leader in innovation through inclusive, high-skilled migration and international collaboration.
