KU Reinforces Commitment to Environmental Responsibility Through Cycling Initiative

World Bicycle Day serves as a reminder of the numerous benefits of cycling, not only as a mode of transport but also as a means to promote health, sustainability, and community engagement. To mark this occasion, the University of Kashmir (KU) hosted a special edition of ‘Sundays on Cycle’ on 1 June 2025.

Organised by the university’s Department of Students’ Welfare (DSW) in collaboration with the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi, the event encouraged students, faculty members, and university officials to participate actively. It aimed to highlight the importance of cycling for individual well-being and environmental responsibility, fostering a collective commitment towards a greener and healthier future. In her message, Vice-Chancellor Professor Nilofer Khan emphasised that cycling represents not merely a mode of transport but a symbol of dedication to the planet, personal health, and shared community values. She expressed encouragement for the strong involvement in initiatives that foster sustainable and healthy living.

The cycle marathon was jointly inaugurated by the Dean of Academic Affairs, Professor Shariefuddin Pirzada, and the Registrar, Professor Naseer Iqbal. Addressing the participants, Professor Pirzada remarked that such events exemplify the university’s broader dedication to sustainability and student wellness, while Professor Iqbal highlighted that cycling serves as an inclusive activity, uniting various sections of the university community in pursuit of a common cause.

Furthermore, Professor Pervez Ahmed, Dean of Students’ Welfare, stated that the youth are the bearers of a sustainable future, and events like this reinforce the values of health, discipline, and responsibility among students.
