University of Lynchburg Honors Its Legacy with Founders Week Events Open to Students and the Public

Founders Week at University of Lynchburg to Feature Senior Capstone Projects, "Code Red" Lacrosse Game, and More

The University of Lynchburg is preparing to commemorate its rich history and the spirit of giving during its annual Founders Week, which runs from April 14 to April 19. This special celebration honours the legacy of Josephus Hopwood, who, in 1903, acquired the property that would eventually become the University of Lynchburg after successfully persuading five of his associates to each contribute $100. University officials announced that the centrepiece of the Founders Week festivities would be Give Day, which is set for April 17. Throughout the day, students, alumni, faculty, staff, and parents will be encouraged to donate to the University, with the ambitious goal of reaching 1,000 donors. Contributions could be made online, over the phone, or in person.

Organisers announced a series of events for GiveDay, including "Doughnuts for Dollars" in the morning, a midday "Pie in the Face" for participants with GiveDay stickers, and an evening cookout with a cash bar at the Dell and Hundley Highway. A live broadcast, GiveDay Live, will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with guest speakers and conclude with a birthday song for the University, streamed on its Facebook page. Alumni are invited to all events.

University representatives announced that while most Founders Week events are for students, some will be open to the public. These include the Student Scholar Showcase on April 16, featuring senior capstone projects across various disciplines, and public sporting events: a baseball game against Christopher Newport University at 3:30 p.m. and a women’s lacrosse game versus Roanoke College at 7 p.m. The lacrosse game is a "Code Red" event, encouraging the community to wear Hornet red.

To conclude the week, the University announced two doubleheaders on April 19, featuring the baseball team playing Bridgewater on Fox Field at noon and the softball team competing against Christopher Newport on Moon Field at 1:30 p.m. These events are expected to bring together students, alumni, and the community to celebrate the University’s enduring legacy. The University expressed hope that Founders Week would honour its storied past and inspire continued engagement and support from its vibrant community.
