Strong NSS Performance Reinforces Portsmouth’s Commitment to Student Experience

Portsmouth Secures Top Ten Spot in England for Learning Resources, NSS Finds

In an era where student satisfaction and institutional responsiveness are increasingly central to higher education, the University of Portsmouth has distinguished itself as a sector leader. According to the latest National Student Survey (NSS), published on 9 July by the Office for Students (OfS), the university was ranked 9th in England for learning resources, an accolade based on feedback from final-year full-time undergraduate students.

Furthermore, Portsmouth achieved commendable national standings, placing 24th for promoting mental health support and 25th for academic support among mainstream English universities. These outcomes underscore the university’s holistic approach to student wellbeing and academic development. Regionally, its performance was equally impressive, securing 2nd place in the South East for both student voice and learning resources, thereby reflecting its sustained investment in inclusive and responsive learning environments.

In addition to its NSS success, the university has recently earned a Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and ranked among the top three modern UK universities for research power. It has also received £5.8 million in OfS funding to enhance its Faculty of Technology with advanced laboratories and equipment, alongside a £5.6 million investment in modernising its Dental Academy. Moreover, the launch of a medical degree in collaboration with King’s College London marks a strategic step toward establishing its medical school.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Graham Galbraith CBE welcomed the positive student feedback, emphasising its role in shaping academic programmes, facilities, and the overall student experience. He noted that the NSS results serve as a valuable guide for prospective students and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to achieving top-25 status in the UK by 2035, with global recognition for its impact.

Echoing this sentiment, Blessing Okafor, Education Officer at the University of Portsmouth Students’ Union (UPSU), expressed pride in the union’s contributions, through student representation, campaigns, and behind-the-scenes advocacy, which have helped ensure students feel heard and supported. She also conveyed optimism for continued progress.
