Waikato Region Sees Strong Rebound in Global Education Participation in 2024

The University of Waikato is playing an increasingly prominent role in New Zealand’s international education resurgence, aligning with broader national trends of growth and global engagement. According to figures from Education New Zealand, nearly 6,000 international students studied in the Waikato region in 2024, representing a 50% increase compared to the previous year. Of these, 2,780 students were enrolled at universities, including the University of Waikato, while 1,215 attended Te Pūkenga, the national institute of skills and technology. Vice-Chancellor Professor Neil Quigley confirmed that international enrolments at the University of Waikato had risen by 60%, with domestic enrolments increasing by 8%.
