UNM Welcomes International Students for Intensive English and Cultural Immersion

In today’s interconnected world, universities are increasingly seen as central to promoting global awareness and cross-cultural understanding. The University of New Mexico’s Global Education Office was reported to be leading this effort by serving as the university’s main link to international engagement. Its mission, according to officials, is to build a globally aware academic community through international education programmes, cross-cultural learning, and resources that help students, faculty, and staff succeed in a globalised environment.

One of the office’s flagship initiatives is said to be the short-term global certificate programme, which has offered two- to four-week customised courses for over two decades. These courses are tailored to suit the interests and needs of international partners. Paul Edmunds, Director of the Centre for English Language and American Culture, was noted for playing a key role in developing this programme. He reportedly commented that working with international communities not only introduces students to UNM’s academic offerings but also helps the university express its own cultural identity.

Furthermore, the programme has enabled partnerships with institutions across South America, Europe, and Asia. Initiatives such as the Friends of Fulbright Argentina Programme and collaborations with the Hungarian University of Sports Science were highlighted. Most recently, in June, four students from Chinese Cultural University (CCU) in Taiwan took part in a four-week English immersion camp at UNM, designed to support their academic language development.

Professor Li-Hsiang Chang, who accompanied the students, was quoted as saying that the visit aimed to enhance both their English fluency and problem-solving abilities in unfamiliar cultural contexts. She expressed the belief that New Mexico’s rich multicultural environment would offer a unique learning experience that would contribute meaningfully to the students’ academic and personal development.

During the visit, the students lived in on-campus housing, participated in daily English classes, and simultaneously completed coursework for both UNM and CCU. Edmunds and his team were reported to have arranged their academic timetable, cultural excursions, and day-to-day needs. Their schedule included trips to Santa Fe, the Sandia Peak Tramway, ABQ Uptown, and Jemez Pueblo, along with meals at popular local eateries like Saggios. Chuang noted that the programme had improved her spoken English and would help in her master’s studies, while Chen said it boosted her confidence in using English during travel and daily interactions. The University of New Mexico’s short-term programmes continue to serve as a powerful platform for academic enrichment and cross-cultural exchange, fostering lasting global connections.
