West Bengal’s Centralised Portal Transforms Undergraduate Admissions

New Era of Digital Admissions: West Bengal’s Innovative Portal For Seamless UG Admissions.

The West Bengal Government has inaugurated a Centralised Admission Portal for undergraduate college admissions for over 400 colleges and 16 universities in the State this year. This initiative marked a prodigious step towards streamlining the admissions process for higher education. Centralised admissions refer to offering students admission to a variety of courses by accessing a single platform nationwide. This is the first in the state, and its objective is to make the application process more pleasurable and straightforward for students, while facilitating a more transparent and easy college admissions process, also reducing a great deal of paperwork for candidates, institutions, and universities.

The centralized admission portal took 10 years to develop and now it's ready to provide a unified platform for college candidates nationwide. The "Applicants would no longer have to resort to making in-person manual applications for provisional admission going forward," School and Higher Education Minister Bratya Basu said on Wednesday to reporters at Kolkata's Bikash Bhavan. There would be no additional fees other than the final enrollment cost for the desired course at the end of the admission process. This will play a crucial role in modernising and digitising the Educational system of West Bengal colleges.

Key points of the Admission Process:-

  • Registration and application process for admission in undergraduate courses will commence between June 24 and July 7.
  • Applications are being accepted for a total of 9,46,921 seats in the State’s institutions and programs this year.
  • The first round of admissions will run from July 12 to July 18.
  • From July 23 to July 26, applicants will have the opportunity to upgrade or modify their seats. On August 20, a final allocation list and merit list will be released.
  • The application can be submitted by the Centralised Admission Tab online at https://banglaruchchashiksha.wb.gov.in or https://wbsche.wb.gov.in, students can also apply directly by clicking on https://wbcap.in/.

The Minister further pointed out that while a candidate may choose to upgrade to a more desirable seat in the second round of admissions, they are not permitted to enroll in multiple courses at once through the national admissions system. "Based on the number of available seats, a second merit list will be released following the completion of the first round of admissions procedures. Students may choose to upgrade based on the second merit list, subject to seat availability, if they did not receive their initial choice, according to Mr. Basu.

In case a student wishes to switch to a different course, they would only have to pay the excess amount based on the difference in admission fees between the two courses. “If the fees of the second course are lower than that of the first, the balance amount would be refunded automatically to the applicants’ bank accounts at the end of the admissions procedure,” Mr. Basu said. He added that no additional procedures have to be undertaken by the students to retrieve the balance amount in admission fees in case of a change.

Out of the 7217 undergraduate courses that are available in the system, students may apply to a maximum of 25 courses through the portal. However, applicants wishing to be admitted to Jadavpur University, Presidency University, autonomous institutions, minority colleges, B.Ed. programs, law programs, and fine arts and performing arts programs are not eligible to use the admission portal.

It is foreseen that the execution of the unified portal will assist educational institutions as well as students in many ways. Students feel more relieved as it lessens the administrative load and anxiety related to the admissions procedure, now they can focus more on their academic preparations. Furthermore, the openness and effectiveness of the portal might allay worries regarding prejudice and partiality in college admissions.
