Dr Douglas Proctor Joins York University Amid Renewed Focus on Transnational Education and Sustainability

York University, Canada’s third-largest university with over 53,000 students and 7,000 staff, has announced the appointment of Dr Douglas Proctor as its new Senior International Officer. Dr Proctor will join the university later this year from his current role as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Global Engagement) at Swinburne University of Technology in Australia. Holding a PhD in international higher education from the University of Melbourne, Dr Proctor is also an honorary fellow at the Melbourne Centre for the Study of Higher Education and a senior fellow of the International Education Association of Australia (IEAA). He co-edited The Future Agenda for Internationalisation in Higher Education (Routledge, 2018), and is widely recognised as a thought leader in global education. While policy frameworks differ, the operational realities are strikingly alike. Dr Proctor also reflected on the global value of Australian expertise in international education, recalling its influence during his tenure in Ireland. However, he critiqued Australia’s limited career mobility for international education professionals, contrasting it with Canada’s more open and globally minded approach.
