Historic Achievement: 24 LPU Students Selected for Paris 2024 Olympics

Lovely Professional University (LPU) is renowned for its internationally benchmarked curricula and diverse student body. Emphasizing experiential learning, research, innovation, and entrepreneurship, LPU recently achieved a historic milestone by having its students represent India at the Summer Olympics in Paris. Similarly, Chandigarh University has made its mark by sending its students to the Olympics. India is making its mark at the Summer Olympics in Paris, with Manu Bhaker from Haryana in shooting. Adding to this success, 24 students from Lovely Professional University (LPU) have been selected for the Olympics, positioning LPU as the second-largest contingent supporting the Indian team, after Stanford University, with 21% of the Indian Olympic squad coming from the university, underscoring its global influence in sports excellence. LPU athletes, who make up 21 percent of the 117-person Indian squad, will compete in boxing, weightlifting, wrestling, hockey, javelin, and athletics. This achievement demonstrates LPU's extraordinary commitment to combining academic success and athletic prowess.

Neeraj Chopra, a BA student and Tokyo 2020 gold medalist in men's javelin throw, and Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, an MA Psychology student and leading weightlifter in the women's 49 kg category, are standout athletes from Lovely Professional University (LPU) for the Paris Olympics 2024. Additionally, several LPU players are part of the Indian Hockey Team: Manpreet Singh, Gurjant, and Jarmanpreet Singh (MBA students), and Captain Harmanpreet Singh, Hardik Singh, Shamsher Singh, Mandeep Singh, and Sukhjeet Singh (BA students). 

There will be 329 events in 32 sports at the 33rd Olympiad, which will take place in Paris. There will be 754 sessions of ceremonies and competitions. With 10,500 competitors from all over the world competing, millions of spectators and billions of viewers are anticipated worldwide for the Games. Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal, Founder of Lovely Professional University (LPU) and Member of Parliament, expressed immense pride in the university's historic achievement. He was gratified that 24 students from Lovely Professional University were selected for the Indian delegation at the Paris Olympics, noting that this achievement positions LPU as the second-largest contingent worldwide, after Stanford University. He conveyed that representing their country is a significant accomplishment and emphasized the honor of having 24 students wearing the Indian tricolor.

The following notable Lovely Professional University (LPU) athletes were chosen to compete in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris:

• Boxers: Preeti (B.Sc. Health & Physical Education, 54 kg), Jasmine (B.P.Ed., 57 kg), and Lovlina Borgohain (BA, 75 kg).
• Wrestlers: Antim Panghal (53 kg), Vinesh Phogat (50 kg), Nisha (68 kg), and Anshu Malik (57 kg) with an MA in English.
• Competing in both the 10m air pistol and 10m air pistol mixed team events is shooter Arjun Singh Cheema, an MA in public administration.

Other athletes include archers Dhiraj Bommadevra and Tarundeep Roy, Paramjit, Vikash (men's 20-kilometre race walk), Balraj Panwar (BBA, Mix rowing), and Kiran Pahal (BA).
Lovely Professional University (LPU) has invested heavily in top-tier sports facilities and 100% scholarships for talented athletes, leading to notable success. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, 13 LPU students won three medals one gold, one silver, and one bronze. With 24 athletes set to compete in Paris 2024, LPU continues to excel in sports excellence.
