Deakin and Lancaster Universities Collaborate for Innovative Trilateral Partnership

First UK-Australia Joint International Campus Launches in West Java

The Deakin University Lancaster University Indonesia (DLI) campus was officially launched at an opening ceremony in Bandung, West Java, on February 26, 2025. This event marked the inauguration of the first UK-Australia joint international campus, creating new opportunities for transnational education and Indonesian students. The ceremony was attended by senior government and diplomatic representatives, university partners, education agents, and leaders from the education sector. The DLI campus represents an innovative trilateral education partnership, offering dual undergraduate qualifications from two renowned universities. Courses in Business and Information Technology will begin in September 2025, providing Indonesian students with a world-class education close to home.

Professor Iain Martin, Vice-Chancellor of Deakin University, stated that the Deakin Lancaster Indonesia campus would build on the university's strong ties with Indonesia, offering a world-class academic experience through Deakin’s educational excellence and Lancaster’s strengths in research and transnational education. Furthermore, Professor Andy Schofield, Vice-Chancellor of Lancaster University, described the event as a celebration of what can be achieved when leading global universities collaborate. He looked forward to watching the progress of DLI students as they prepared for exciting future careers.

Professor Greg Barton, the inaugural Rector of DLI, emphasized that the Deakin University Lancaster University Indonesia campus was a testament to how international education can be both excellent and accessible. He highlighted that the new campus in Bandung combined the best of British and Australian academic traditions, offering an exceptional international education experience within reach for students in Indonesia.

The Australian and UK Embassies have welcomed the DLI campus for increasing access to world-class education in Indonesia. British Ambassador Dominic Jermey stated that the UK Government has supported the project since 2022, emphasizing its role in strengthening UK-Indonesia collaboration in higher education, innovation, and research. Additionally, Gita Kamath, Australian Charge d’Affaires to Indonesia, highlighted education as key to the Australia-Indonesia relationship. She noted that Deakin and Lancaster University’s partnership would enhance access to international education for Indonesian students, supporting the government’s focus on human capital development. The partnership is also backed by Navitas, a global leader in transnational education.

Students at the DLI campus will benefit from a unique educational experience that combines the strengths of two prestigious universities, preparing them for successful and fulfilling careers in a globalized world.
