The Foundation of Light, the official charity of Sunderland AFC, serves over 23,000 people annually across the North East with programs focusing on health, education, and skills. With a team of teachers, health workers, and coaches, it raises £4 million each year to fund initiatives that improve well-being. The Foundation works closely with local stakeholders, including the City Council and the University of Sunderland, to enhance education, health, and overall quality of life.
Durham University has partnered with the Foundation of Light charity to improve communities across North East England. Following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), both parties have committed to advancing education, health, and well-being in the region. The first project, the 'Youth Health Hub' in Stanley, North Durham, will focus on addressing key issues such as education, health, and social care for local young people. This project will provide support services such as weekly sessions, mentoring, creative and physical activities, and school-based interventions to benefit local youth. Durham University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Karen O’Brien, underscored that this collaboration will improve life chances and promote prosperity in North East England.
She emphasized that as the Foundation of Light is well recognised for its success in creating opportunities and developing skills within communities, it will transform young lives and pave the way for future impactful initiatives. Sir Bob Murray, Chair of Trustees at the Foundation of Light, highlighted that the partnership with Durham University will strengthen their efforts to invest in communities and transform lives. The partnership will explore further collaboration with Durham County Council on school transitions, financial literacy, and digital skills, as well as mentoring programs with social housing providers. The MoU marks the start of a long-term commitment to creating positive change in North East England.
