Imperial and Lund University Collaboration to Boost West London's Ecosystem
Towards an Ambitious FP10: Launch of New Report at Brussels Event
Feb 04, 2025 |
In a significant move to enhance global partnerships in innovation, education, and science, Imperial College London and Lund University in Sweden have entered into a strategic collaboration. This agreement, signed in Brussels by Lund University Vice-Chancellor Erik Renström and Imperial College President Hugh Brady, aims to integrate Imperial's West Tech Corridor with Lund University's Innovation District. The collaboration will create a powerful platform to foster growth and development, particularly benefiting West London's new competitive ecosystem.
The signing event also marked the launch of Towards an Ambitious FP10, a report by Imperial, CEPS, and Wellcome, offering recommendations for the EU's upcoming tenth Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (FP10). A study from Imperial's World Weather Attribution found that climate change played a major role in the LA wildfires, which were worsened by reduced rainfall and dried vegetation. The fires destroyed or damaged over 16,000 buildings, forced 200,000 evacuations and led to approximately 28 deaths.
Dr Clair Barnes from Imperial College London stated that climate change has heightened the risk of devastating fires, with drought conditions extending into winter, increasing the chance of fires during strong Santa Ana winds. She warned that without a faster shift away from fossil fuels, California would face hotter, drier, and more flammable conditions.
Roop Singh, Head of Urban and Attribution at the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre, noted that while climate change dried out the hills around LA, the hurricane-force Santa Ana winds, rapid urban spread, and a strained water system made the fires especially hard to control. These initiatives and findings underscore the urgent need for global collaboration and innovative approaches to tackle pressing challenges in education, research, and climate change.
