Jaishankar Highlights Transformative Growth in India-Australia Relations

As India and Australia mark five years of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Australia across critical and emerging sectors. Speaking at an event hosted by the Australian High Commission in New Delhi, he emphasised the remarkable transformation in bilateral ties and stressed the importance of broadening collaboration in key areas over the next decade.

Joined by Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles, Jaishankar highlighted critical minerals, cyber, technology, space, and sports as essential domains for future cooperation. He underscored their strategic importance for both nations, stating that these sectors will be pivotal in deepening economic and technological partnerships. Jaishankar also pointed to the significance of strategic coordination through platforms such as the Quad, East Asia Summit, Indian Ocean Rim Association, United Nations, and the India-France-Australia trilateral. He noted that such a robust partnership seemed unlikely a decade ago but affirmed that Australia has now become one of India's closest political and security partners.

Over the past five years, India and Australia have strengthened ties through annual summits, a 2+2 Dialogue, and high-level consultations across trade, education, energy, and skills development. Notable agreements include the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA), mobility and migration pacts, mutual recognition of qualifications, and visa programmes such as Work and Holiday and MATES. In addition, Australian universities have begun establishing campuses in India, further deepening academic collaboration.

Acknowledging the growing defence ties between the two nations, Jaishankar expressed gratitude for Australia's support following the Pahalgam terror attack. He also recognised the Indian-Australian community as a vital bridge between both countries, stressing that the partnership is built on trust, respect, and a shared vision. With both sides firmly committed to strengthening cooperation, India and Australia are set to further enhance their strategic alliance in the years ahead.
