Odisha Targets 10 GW Renewable Energy Capacity by 2030 with New Collaboration

Partnership Focuses on Hydrogen Production, Energy Storage, and Microgrids

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Singapore, the Odisha Government's Energy Department, and IIT Bhubaneswar have partnered to advance sustainable energy technologies. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed on January 17, 2025, during Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam's visit, focuses on tackling global energy challenges and fostering innovation in renewable energy, hydrogen production, energy storage, and microgrids.

The partnership aims to develop advanced renewable energy systems, including solar, wind, hydro, and waste-to-energy technologies, to enhance efficiency and meet growing demands. Researchers will focus on cost-effective energy storage solutions like battery systems, hydrogen, and gravitational storage. The initiative also explores sustainable hydrogen production through seawater and sewage electrolysis. Professor Lam Khin Yong from NTU Singapore highlighted the collaboration's potential to accelerate sustainable energy development, benefiting both nations and the broader region.

Additionally, the collaboration integrates renewable energy into microgrids for efficient grid management and explores energy markets, deregulation, and economic models for large-scale renewable adoption. It will also focus on energy-efficient building designs, climate research, and sustainability processes. Professor Madhavi Srinivasan of NTU emphasized the importance of capacity-building programs, including student and faculty exchanges, for interdisciplinary learning. Professor Shreepad Karmalkar of IIT Bhubaneswar emphasized the initiative's potential to nurture talent, promote startups, and explore emerging sectors like semiconductor technology, AI, and waste management.

Vishal Kumar Dev, Odisha’s Principal Secretary for Energy, emphasized the state’s goal of adding 10 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. He highlighted the MoU's role in fostering innovation in energy and strengthening ties between Odisha and Singapore. Professor Srinivasan signed the agreement on behalf of the university. She was accompanied by Debi Dutta Tripathy, FA-cum-Additional Secretary to the Government of Odisha’s Energy Department, and Professor Prasant Kumar Sahu, Dean of Alumni Affairs and International Relations at IIT Bhubaneswar. This partnership marks a significant step in sustainable energy solutions. By combining resources and expertise, the institutions aim to tackle global energy challenges, drive innovation, and create a cleaner, more efficient energy future through international cooperation.
